Mahabodhi Temple, Bodh Gaya

Significance
UNESCO World Heritage Site. Site of Buddha's enlightenment c. 528 BCE. Sacred to all Buddhist schools — Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana — and revered in Hindu Dashavatara as 9th avatar of Vishnu.
Legend
Prince Siddhartha sat under the Pipal tree (Ficus religiosa) here for 49 days. On the full moon of Vaisakha, he attained Bodhi (enlightenment) and became the Buddha. The current Bodhi Tree is a descendant from cuttings of the original.
