Significance
One of the Pancha Bhuta Sthalas representing Akasha (ether/space) and the foremost of the five dance halls (Pancha Sabhai) of Shiva; the only temple where Shiva is worshipped primarily in his dancing form alongside the formless Chidambara Rahasyam
Legend
Sages Patanjali (serpent-bodied) and Vyaghrapada (tiger-footed) performed severe tapas here to witness Shivas cosmic Ananda Tandava; Shiva danced for them in the Kanaka Sabha after defeating Kali in a dance contest, with the dropped earring episode immortalised in the Urdhva Tandava posture
