Melukote Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple
मेलुकोटे चेलुवनारायण स्वामी मन्दिर
Presiding deity: Lord Cheluvanarayana Swamy (Vishnu as Tirunarayana — "the beautiful one") with consort Yadugiri Thayar; processional deity Sampathkumara (Cheluvapille Raya) recovered by Sri Ramanujacharya from Delhi in 1098 CE
Established: Ancient (Krita Yuga tradition); current Dravidian shrine restored and re-systematized by Sri Ramanujacharya (1098–1109 CE) during his 12-year residence
Significance
One of the 108 Divya Desams of Sri Vaishnavism (sung in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by Tirumangai Alvar). The most authoritative seat of Vishishtadvaita Vedanta after Srirangam — Ramanujacharya lived here for 12 years (1098–1109 CE), composed Sriranga Gadyam and Vaikuntha Gadyam here, and converted thousands. The Cheluvapille Raya processional deity was personally retrieved by Ramanuja from the daughter of the Delhi Sultan (Tulukka Nachiyar), making Melukote uniquely a symbol of Hindu-Muslim devotional accommodation. Three priceless crowns (Vairamudi diamond, Rajamudi gold, Krishnaraja Wodeyar) used in annual utsavams.
Legend
Krita Yuga: Vishnu appeared here as Tirunarayana at the request of sage Narada, who established the linga at Yoga Narasimha hilltop. Kali Yuga (1098 CE): Ramanujacharya, fleeing Chola persecution from Srirangam, settled at Melukote after a dream-vision. He discovered the original murti hidden in an anthill, but the Utsava-murti (Sampathkumara) had been taken by Mughal raiders to Delhi. Ramanuja journeyed to Delhi; the Sultan's daughter had developed deep love for the deity. Ramanuja called: "Cheluvapille Raya, come to my hand!" — and the deity walked into his arms. The Sultan's daughter Bibi Nachiyar followed and merged into the deity at Melukote — she is now eternally enshrined as Tulukka Nachiyar in a separate shrine and offered daily roti+dal (Mughlai naivedya).

Vairamudi Utsava (next: March 2026) is one of South India's most spectacular festivals — the diamond crown is brought from the Mandya treasury under armed guard at midnight; the 30-second darshan window where Sampathkumara wears it draws 500,000+. Melukote Sanskrit Academy preserves Vishishtadvaita manuscripts. The Akka-Tangi Kola (Kalyani pushkarini) is treated as Pushkarani-tirtha equal to Ganga. Melukote was the Kannada-Sanskrit literary capital under Mysuru Wodeyars — patronized by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, whose Krishnamudi crown is the third utsava-crown.
