Significance

One of Char Dham. The Mahaprasad (cooked here for 1000+ years in earthen pots on wood fire) is considered the holiest food on earth. Non-Hindus banned inside (per ancient temple charter).

Legend

King Indradyumna built the temple after Vishnu appeared in his dream as a wooden idol washing ashore. The deities are renewed every 12-19 years (Nabakalebara) — the most secretive ritual in Hinduism.
