Jambukeshwarar Thiruvanaikoil
जम्बुकेश्वर मन्दिर
Presiding deity: Lord Shiva (Jambukeshwar — Lord of Jamun tree)
Established: Ancient pre-Vedic; current temple 11th century CE Chola
Significance
Pancha Bhoota Sthala — represents Jala (water element). The lingam emerges from water continuously — a small spring under the lingam keeps it permanently submerged. Believed to be the original water element manifestation of Shiva. Adi Shankaracharya prescribed this site for Jala-tattva sadhana.
Legend
Per Skanda Purana, Goddess Akhilandeshwari performed severe penance at this spot under a jamun (Indian blackberry) tree. The Cauvery river overflowed continuously — Shiva manifested as Jambukeshwarar to bless his devotee + permanently established water as His element here. The continuously-submerged lingam is the physical proof of this manifestation.
