Arunachaleshwarar Thiruvannamalai
अरुणाचलेश्वर तिरुवण्णामलै
Presiding deity: Lord Shiva (Arunachal — fire mountain)
Established: 9th century CE; Chola dynasty + later expansions
Significance
Pancha Bhoota Sthala — represents Agni (fire element). The Arunachal mountain itself is the manifestation of Shiva as fire-pillar. Sage Markandeya + Ramana Maharshi both attained moksha here. The 14km Girivalam (mountain circumambulation) is the central spiritual practice — done barefoot at full moon by serious sadhakas. Sri Ramana Maharshi ashram + Skandashram (Sri Ramana mountain cave) are integral pilgrimage stops.
Legend
Per Skanda Purana, Brahma and Vishnu disputed over which of them was greater. Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite fire-pillar (Arunachal) reaching from underworld to heaven. He challenged: whoever reaches the top or bottom wins. Vishnu as Varaha boar dug into earth, Brahma as Hamsa swan flew up. Neither could find the end. Brahma falsely claimed to have seen the top — angering Shiva who cursed him (no temple worship for Brahma except at Pushkar). Vishnu honestly admitted failure — receiving Shiva blessing.
