Sri Kalahasti Vayu Element
श्रीकालहस्ती
Presiding deity: Lord Shiva (Kalahasteeswara — Vayu element)
Established: 5th century CE; Pallava + Chola contributions
Significance
Pancha Bhoota Sthala — represents Vayu (Air element). The temple lingam shows movement (wind effects visible on lamp flame inside the sanctum). Particularly powerful for Rahu-Ketu Dosha + Sarpa Dosha (snake-related karmic afflictions) — a specialty ritual unique to Sri Kalahasti. Adi Shankaracharya consecrated as Vayu Tatva site.
Legend
Per Skanda Purana, three small creatures — Sri (spider), Kala (snake), Hasti (elephant) — each worshipped Shiva intensely with different methods (web, coiling, water-spraying). When their devotional offerings clashed + harmed each other, Lord Shiva merged them all into one form + manifested as Sri-Kala-Hasti (named after them). The temple is among the few where animal devotion is honored as foundational story.
