Lingaraj Temple Bhubaneswar
लिङ्गराज मन्दिर
Presiding deity: Lord Lingaraj (Shiva-Vishnu fusion form unique to Odisha)
Established: 7th century CE; current structure 11th century by Ganga dynasty
Significance
One of the oldest standing temples in India (11th century, Kalinga architecture). The Lingaraj fusion of Shiva-Vishnu (Harihara) is unique — devotees worship a single tall (~8 feet) granite lingam representing both deities. The temple complex includes 150 subsidiary shrines spread across 1.5 acres. UNESCO short-listed for World Heritage. Non-Hindus historically restricted from entry, though external viewing platform exists.
Legend
According to Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva chose Ekamra Kshetra (ancient name of Bhubaneswar) as his residence with Parvati. The mango tree forest here was considered uniquely sacred. King Yayati Keshari (Ganga dynasty) commissioned the current temple in 11th century after a divine vision instructing him to enshrine the natural lingam. The Bindu Sagar tank beside the temple is believed to be fed by drops from every sacred river in India.
