Significance

One of 12 Jyotirlingas. The only Swayambhu (self-manifested) and only south-facing (Dakshinmukhi) Jyotirlinga. Bhasma Aarti uses ash that was once from cremation grounds.

Legend

Demon Dushana terrorized Ujjain devotees. Shiva emerged from the ground as Mahakaleshwar and reduced him to ashes. The lord stayed, accepting ash worship as a reminder of mortality.
