Sadhana Pada — On Practice

Sādhana Pāda

Central focus: The practical eight-limbed (ashtanga) path for beginners

Audience: The aspirant whose mind is still distracted — the householder yogi

Summary

Patanjali pivots from describing the goal to handing the seeker a practical kit. He introduces Kriyā Yoga (tapas + svādhyāya + Īśvara-praṇidhāna), the five kleśas (afflictions) that bind us, the doctrine of karma and its fruits, and finally the first five of the eight limbs (aṣṭāṅga): yamas, niyamas, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra. This is the chapter every modern yoga practitioner unknowingly inherits.

Key concepts

  • Kriyā Yoga: tapas (discipline) + svādhyāya (self-study) + Īśvara-praṇidhāna (surrender)
  • Five kleśas: avidyā, asmitā, rāga, dveṣa, abhiniveśa
  • Heyaṁ duḥkham anāgatam — future sorrow can be averted
  • The 5 yamas (ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha)
  • The 5 niyamas (saucha, santosha, tapas, svadhyaya, isvara-pranidhana)
  • Āsana: sthira-sukham āsanam (steady + comfortable)
  • Prāṇāyāma + pratyāhāra (breath + sense-withdrawal)
