Purusha Suktamपुरुष सूक्त

Devoted to Purusha (Cosmic Being / Narayana)

Source: Rig Veda 10.90 — 16 verses; also Yajur, Sama, Atharva

Sanskrit (Devanagari)
सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्। स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वा अत्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम्॥

Transliteration

Sahasra-shirsha Purushah Sahasra-akshah Sahasra-pat | Sa Bhumim Vishvato Vritva Atyatishthad Dasha-angulam

Meaning (English)

The Cosmic Being has a thousand heads, thousand eyes, thousand feet. He pervades the entire universe and yet stands 10 fingers (dasha-angulam) above it — transcendent yet immanent. The 16 verses describe how all of creation (sun, moon, varnas, vedas, animals) emerged from the cosmic sacrifice (yajna) of Purusha.

Benefits (Phal)

Removes ignorance of self, grants vision of cosmic-unity, prosperity (used in Lakshmi puja Shodashopachara), suitable for any auspicious occasion. Considered most universal Vedic hymn — invokes form-of-everything. Recited in major Vishnu temples daily, in all Vedic yajnas.

When to Chant

Daily morning sandhya; Lakshmi-Narayana puja; griha-pravesh; wedding; any yajna. 16 verses make natural shodashopachara mapping.
