English Meaning

Opening Doha: I bow to Mother Lakshmi, the supreme Goddess of fortune, who blesses Her devotees with wealth, joy, and dharma. Grant me, O Mother, the wealth of true devotion.

Verses 1-4: Victory to Mahalakshmi, consort of Lord Vishnu, Mother of the universe. You arose from the ocean of milk during the great churning, bringing prosperity to gods and men.

Verses 5-8: Your form is radiant — seated on a lotus, four-armed, holding lotuses, with elephants showering You with sacred water. Gold and red garments adorn You; ornaments of every kind shine upon Your body.

Verses 9-12: You manifest in eight forms (Ashta-Lakshmi): Adi Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, and Vidya Lakshmi — bestowing every kind of wealth.

Verses 13-16: Wealth in Your sense is not only money but also food grains, courage, victory, knowledge, family well-being, and spiritual progress. True Lakshmi is righteousness itself.

Verses 17-20: When sages, kings, and devotees worshipped You with sincere hearts — Indra, Kubera, Rama, the gopis, and countless saints — You blessed them with abundance and inner peace.

Verses 21-24: Where there is cleanliness, truth, hard work, and devotion, there You happily reside. Where there is laziness, dishonesty, or quarreling, You quietly depart.

Verses 25-28: On Diwali night, devotees light lamps and welcome You into their homes. The auspicious month of Margashirsha and every Friday are especially dear to You.

Verses 29-32: Worship of Lord Vishnu pleases You most, for You are inseparable from Him. Whoever serves Narayana truly, You serve as well, granting prosperity in this world and liberation in the next.

Verses 33-36: O Mother, remove poverty, debts, and illness from my home. Bless me with honest livelihood, virtuous family, and a heart contented in Your remembrance.

Verses 37-40: Whoever recites this Lakshmi Chalisa with devotion receives Your grace. Their home becomes a temple, their work becomes worship, and their life becomes blessed.

Closing Doha: Glory to Mother Mahalakshmi — giver of wealth, dharma, and liberation. May Your kind glance forever rest upon Your children.
