English Meaning
Opening Doha: Bowing my head to Sri Ganesha, son of Gauri, lord of obstacles and giver of intelligence, I begin this chalisa praying for wisdom and grace.
Verses 1-4: Victory to Lord Ganapati, Mahadeva's son, the giver of every accomplishment. Mother Parvati is Your mother; Lord Shiva is Your father; Kartikeya is Your brother. The whole world bows at Your feet.
Verses 5-8: Your form is glorious — elephant face, large belly, four arms holding the noose, goad, broken tusk, and modak. The mouse is Your humble vehicle; vermilion shines on Your forehead.
Verses 9-12: When the gods needed someone to write down the Mahabharata as Vyasa recited it, You alone could match the task. Using Your own broken tusk as a pen, You wrote without pause.
Verses 13-16: When You once obstructed Lord Shiva at Mother Parvati's command, He, not knowing You, severed Your head. Mother Parvati's grief led to Your being given the head of an elephant and being declared the foremost of all gods.
Verses 17-20: Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and all the devas decreed that no worship, no auspicious work, no sacrifice would bear fruit unless You are remembered first. Hence You are Vighnaharta — the remover of obstacles.
Verses 21-24: You blessed countless devotees — kings, sages, merchants, and humble folk. Even saints like Tulsidas, Surdas, and Moropant sang Your fame. You are easily pleased by sincere love.
Verses 25-28: Whoever offers You durva grass, modaks, red flowers, and sandal paste with devotion finds their wishes fulfilled. Children gain wisdom; students gain success; families gain prosperity.
Verses 29-32: You remove obstacles in studies, work, marriage, and spiritual practice. Diseases of body and mind are calmed by Your name. Even fear of evil spirits flees from those who chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah".
Verses 33-36: O Lord, please dwell in my heart. Grant me intellect, devotion, dispassion, and the strength to walk the path of dharma. May my every undertaking begin and end with Your name.
Verses 37-40: Whoever recites this Ganesha Chalisa daily with faith receives the eight siddhis and nine nidhis. Their home is filled with peace, prosperity, and joy.
Closing Doha: Glory to Sri Ganesha, the lord of beginnings, the destroyer of obstacles, the giver of wisdom and liberation — may He bless all who take His name.
