Significance

The most beloved Krishna shrine in Braj. The deity is considered svayam-vyakta (self-manifested) by Swami Haridas, guru of musician Tansen.

Legend

Swami Haridas sang in deep bhava in Nidhivan c. 1535. Krishna-Radha appeared as one composite form; Haridas requested they merge into a single image — the Banke Bihari murti.
