Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)

  • One meal a day — preferably noon, green color foods
  • No salt, no rice, no tamasic food
  • Green moong (chana, beans) permitted
  • Break fast after Ganesha aarti
  • Green clothes worn
  • Observe 7, 11, or 21 consecutive Wednesdays for udyapan

Rituals (Puja Vidhi)

  1. Bathe, wear green; sit facing east
  2. Ganesha puja with durva grass (21 blades), modak, red flowers
  3. Recite Ganesh Stotram + Sankashtaharan
  4. Offer green moong + green vegetables to Ganesha
  5. Donate green moong, copper, emerald to brahmin/needy
  6. Feed cow with green grass + jaggery

King Indrasena angered Mercury — kingdom suffered communication breakdowns, treasury losses. Sage advised Budhwar vrat. After 21 weeks, Mercury appeared, restored everything. Vrat became prescribed remedy for Budh dosha and Ganesha worship combined.
