Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)
- •Phalahar fast all day; some nirjala
- •No grains, no salt, only fruits + milk
- •Break fast at midnight after Krishna birth puja
- •Some observe complete fast for 24 hours from sunrise prior day

- Decorate cradle/jhulan for baby Krishna
- Recite Bhagavata Purana 10th canto chapter 3 (birth narrative)
- Midnight abhishek of Krishna idol with panchamrit

Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
Kansa imprisoned sister Devaki when prophecy foretold her 8th child would kill him. He killed 6 children. 7th (Balarama) transferred to Rohini. On 8th birth, Krishna manifested in jail, Vasudeva carried him across flooded Yamuna to Gokul. Devaki nourished her foster baby (Yashoda's actual daughter), tricking Kansa.
