Significance
Wife observes nirjala vrat from sunrise to moonrise praying for husband's longevity, health, prosperity. Most cherished marital vrat in North India. Bond expresses gratitude + commitment + invokes Devi's protection.
Who Observes
Married Hindu women (especially Punjab, UP, Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi). Unmarried girls sometimes observe for fiance.
Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)
- •Nirjala (no food, no water) from sunrise to moonrise — 12-14 hours
- •Eat sargi before sunrise (gifted by mother-in-law)
- •No food or water until moon sighting in evening
- •Break fast viewing moon through sieve, then husband's face
- •Husband feeds first sip of water + first bite of sweet
Rituals (Puja Vidhi)
- Sargi (pre-dawn meal) before sunrise
- Wear bridal red/maroon attire, full shringaar (16 traditional adornments)
- Apply mehndi night before
- Karva Chauth katha gathering with other women in evening
- Pass thali in circular motion among gathered women (7 times)
- Moon puja with arghya (water offering) at moonrise

Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
Queen Veervati fasted but her brothers tricked her into breaking fast early seeing fake moon. Husband died. She prayed to Devi who restored him to life. Since then women observe with strictness till actual moonrise.
