About Swaminarayan Akshardham (Delhi)

History

Swaminarayan Akshardham in Delhi was inaugurated on 6 November 2005 by BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha under the leadership of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The complex spans 100 acres and was built in 5 years by 11,000 artisans using over 6,000 tonnes of pink Rajasthani sandstone and Italian Carrara marble — entirely without steel reinforcement. The 141-foot main monument enshrines an 11-foot gold-leafed murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781–1830), founder of the Swaminarayan tradition. Akshardham is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest comprehensive Hindu temple.

Significance

Showcases 10,000 years of Indian civilisation through traditional stone craftsmanship, multimedia exhibitions, India's largest step-well (Yagnapurush Kund), a musical fountain (Sahaj Anand Water Show), an IMAX-format film on a child-yogi's pilgrimage (Mystic India), and a 15-minute boat ride through Indian heritage (Sanskruti Vihar).

About the Deity

An 11-foot gilded murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan stands in the central garbhagriha, surrounded by murtis of his spiritual successors. Surrounding the inner sanctum, 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 grand domes and 20,000 sculpted figures of deities, sadhus and devotees.
