About Shri Badrinath Dham

History

Badrinath, at 3,300 metres along the Alaknanda river in Garhwal, is one of the 108 Divya Desams and the holiest of the four Char Dhams. The presiding deity Badri Narayan is a self-manifested (swayambhu) black saligrama-stone murti of Vishnu in seated meditation pose, said to have been retrieved from the Narada Kund by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. The current temple structure dates to the 16th century and has been periodically renovated. The legend recounts that Vishnu meditated here for thousands of years under a Badri (jujube) tree provided by Lakshmi as shade — hence "Badri-Nath".

Significance

Holiest among the Char Dhams (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath). Believed that pilgrimage here grants moksha. Temple opens only 6 months a year (May–November); during winter, worship moves to Joshimath.

About the Deity

A 1-metre-tall black saligrama murti of Vishnu in padmasana (meditation), flanked by Nara-Narayana, Narada, Kubera, Garuda and Uddhava. Dressed daily in fresh tulsi and ghee adornments. The famed Tapt Kund hot spring at the temple base is used by pilgrims to bathe before darshan.
