Dwarkadhish Temple, also called Jagat Mandir, dates to over 2,500 years ago — built by Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, over Krishna's residential palace in the ancient submerged city of Dwarka. The present 5-storied, 78-metre-tall structure rests on 72 pillars and is built in Chalukya style; it was renovated and expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries. Dwarka is one of the four Char Dhams of India and one of the Sapta Puri sacred cities. Adi Shankaracharya established the Dwarka Sharada Peetham — one of his four mathas — here in the 8th century.
Considered the western pillar of India's Char Dham (with Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram). The flag atop the shikhara, depicting sun and moon, is changed 5 times every day — a tradition continuous for centuries. The temple stands on the banks of the Gomti river's confluence with the Arabian Sea.
A 2.25-foot black-stone (shyam-rang) murti of Lord Krishna in his royal Dwarkadhish form — four-armed, holding conch, discus, mace and lotus, adorned daily in changing fresh shringar (royal attire and ornaments).
