Significance

Aja Ekadashi, also called Annada or Jaya Ekadashi, is the sacred Ekadashi falling in the dark fortnight of Bhadrapad and is one of the most spiritually potent Ekadashis of the entire annual cycle. The very name Aja means unborn, referring to the eternal nature of Bhagwan Vishnu who has neither beginning nor end. The vrata holds the unique distinction of being the redemptive Ekadashi par excellence — capable of absolving sins so grave that other vratas cannot wash them away, including the dreaded brahma-hatya pataka. The vrata also confers Rajasuya yajna phala upon the sincere observer and grants liberation from the cycle of births and deaths even for those of the most fallen background.

Who Observes

Observed by devout Vaishnavas, those seeking absolution from grave past sins, devotees facing prolonged misfortune attributed to past-life karma, widows and ascetics seeking final liberation, and all members of the Sri Vaishnava and Gaudiya sampradayas without exception.

Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)

  • Complete nirjala fast from sunrise on Ekadashi to sunrise on Dwadashi for the orthodox observer
  • Phalahari version permits fruits, milk, water, and Ekadashi-special foods like sabudana, singhada, and rajgira
  • Strictly avoid all grains, lentils, pulses, salt, onion, garlic, and tamasic foods for both Ekadashi and Dwadashi
  • Refrain from sleeping during the day, especially in the afternoon Yam Kala period
  • Maintain absolute brahmacharya, truthfulness, and non-violence in word, thought, and deed
  • Break the fast at the prescribed parana muhurta on Dwadashi morning by offering naivedya to Vishnu and feeding a Vaishnava Brahmin

Rituals (Puja Vidhi)

  1. Pre-dawn snan with Tulsi-mixed water, donning of clean yellow or white garments
  2. Worship of a Salagram Sila or Krishna idol with Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, sandalwood paste, and panchamrit
  3. Continuous recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama, Ashtottara Shatanama Stotra, and Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11 throughout the day
  4. Listening to or reading the Aja Ekadashi mahatmya from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana or Padma Purana
  5. Performing one or more rounds of Vishnu Mantra japa with Tulsi mala (preferred mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya)
  6. Night-long jagaran with kirtan, bhajan, and Hari naam sankirtan in temple or home
  7. Distribution of cooked Dwadashi prasad to Brahmins, Vaishnavas, and the poor on the parana morning

Prasad

Yellow rice pongal, panchamrit, sweet kheer with raisins and cardamom, banana-and-coconut prasad, Tulsi-charanamrit, and naivedyam offered to Vishnu

Benefits (Phal)

Observing Aja Ekadashi with strict adherence to vidhi is said in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana to confer benefits beyond imagination — even those tainted with the gravest sins of brahma-hatya, gau-hatya, surya-pana, and guru-droha are absolved and elevated to the abode of Vishnu. The observer receives the phala of performing one hundred Ashvamedha yajnas and one thousand Rajasuya yajnas. Generational karma accumulated over seven preceding births is dissolved. Diseases of chronic nature, persistent enemy troubles, prolonged debt, and severe planetary doshas including Sade Sati and Pitru Dosha are mitigated. Married couples who observe together are blessed with virtuous progeny.

Primary Mantra

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय। हरिः ॐ तत्सत्।

Vrat Katha (Story Origin)

The Padma Purana narrates the moving story of King Harishchandra, the most truthful king who ever ruled, who lost his entire kingdom, sold his wife and son, and became the keeper of a cremation ground at Kashi under his sworn vow of truth. After years of unbearable suffering, sage Gautama Maharshi appeared before the king and advised him to observe the Aja Ekadashi vrata with complete devotion. Harishchandra observed the fast with absolute faith. By the immense merit of that single vrata, the king was reunited with his queen Shaibya and son Rohitashva (both presumed dead), his entire kingdom was restored, and he was eventually elevated to the abode of Vishnu in his physical body — a phala unprecedented in the puranic literature. This story established Aja Ekadashi as the supreme redemptive vrata of the lunar calendar.
