Putrada Ekadashi Vratपुत्रदा एकादशी व्रत
Devoted to Bhagwan Vishnu (as Narayana, the bestower of progeny) · Twice annually on Pausha Shukla Ekadashi (December-January) and Shravana Shukla Ekadashi (July-August)
Significance
Putrada Ekadashi, literally meaning the Ekadashi that grants sons (and by extension all worthy progeny), is the most celebrated Ekadashi of the Vaishnava calendar for couples seeking the blessing of children. It occurs twice in the lunar year — once in Pausha shukla paksha when winter purification deepens spiritual potency, and again in Shravana shukla paksha when the holy month of Shravan amplifies all sankalpa multifold. Both occasions are considered equally efficacious, though Shravana Putrada is held in slightly higher esteem in the Vaishnava sampradayas due to its association with the impending Krishna Janmashtami a fortnight later. The vrata is observed not merely for biological children but for any worthy result of one creative endeavour — disciples, students, intellectual works, artistic creations, and dharmic legacies.
Who Observes
Observed primarily by married couples seeking the blessing of children, particularly those facing prolonged infertility, repeated miscarriage, or absence of male progeny; also observed by parents praying for the wellbeing and longevity of existing children, by gurus seeking worthy disciples, and by all devout Vaishnavas as part of their annual sadhana cycle.
Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)
- •Couples observing for progeny should preferably keep nirjala fast for full 24 hours; one partner may keep phalahari if health demands
- •Phalahari permits fruits, milk, water, sabudana khichdi, and Ekadashi-approved foods only
- •Strict avoidance of all grains, lentils, salt, onion, garlic, eggs, meat, and intoxicants throughout Ekadashi and Dwadashi
- •Couples should maintain absolute brahmacharya, refraining from physical relations on both Ekadashi and Dwadashi nights
- •Avoid daytime sleep, gossip, anger, harsh speech, and any inauspicious activity
- •Break the fast on Dwadashi morning at the prescribed parana time after offering Vishnu naivedya and feeding a Brahmin couple

Benefits (Phal)
The Padma Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana declare that observing both Putrada Ekadashis annually with full devotion is the most certain spiritual remedy for childlessness known to the Vaishnava tradition. Couples who observe sincerely are blessed with virtuous, intelligent, healthy, and dharma-loving progeny. Existing children of the family are blessed with longevity, success in education, and freedom from disease and accident. The vrata also dissolves the Putra Dosha and Santan Dosha in the natal chart. For those without biological children, the vrata blesses with worthy disciples, intellectual progeny, and dharmic legacy. Practitioners undertaking Santan Gopala Homa alongside the vrata report dramatic results in conception within six months to one year of consistent observance.
Primary Mantra
Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
The Bhavishyottara Purana relates the touching story of King Suketuman of Bhadravati and his queen Shaibya, who despite ruling a prosperous kingdom remained tormented by the absence of a son. Heartbroken, the king renounced his royal duties and wandered into the dense forests of Manasarovar seeking death. There he encountered the divine seers who advised him to observe the Pausha Putrada Ekadashi vrata along with his queen. The royal couple returned to Bhadravati and observed the vrata with absolute faith and adherence to vidhi. Within the year, Queen Shaibya conceived and was blessed with a son of extraordinary virtue, beauty, and dharmic disposition who later expanded the kingdom and became known throughout Bharatavarsha for his righteousness. From that day, the Putrada Ekadashi has been the preeminent vrata of progeny across the lunar calendar.
