Dhanteras Vratधनतेरस व्रत
Devoted to Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kubera · Annually on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi (October-November)
Significance
Dhanteras, the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, honors Lord Dhanvantari — the divine physician who emerged from Samudra Manthan holding the amrit kalash — alongside Lakshmi and Kubera. The vrat invites health, wealth, and household prosperity. Devotees purchase gold, silver, or new utensils believing such acquisitions multiply thirteenfold. Lighting a Yama Deepam at dusk wards off untimely death from the family.

Goddess Lakshmi is believed to enter only clean, illuminated homes, making Dhanteras the gateway to year-long abundance.
Primary Mantra
Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
The Padma Purana narrates how during Samudra Manthan, Lord Dhanvantari emerged on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi holding the amrit kalash and the science of Ayurveda, gifting humanity divine healing. Simultaneously, King Hima son was destined to die on the fourth night of marriage by snakebite. His clever wife piled gold ornaments at the doorway and lit lamps all night singing devotional songs. Yama, mesmerized, departed without claiming him — establishing the Yama Deepam and gold-purchase traditions.
