Devotees prepare a mountain of fifty-six (chappan bhog) food varieties offered to Krishna, symbolizing gratitude for sustenance from the earth and herds.

Spiritually, it teaches surrender, humility, and reverence for ecological balance, aligning the soul with Krishna pastoral leela and ensuring eternal devotion.

Primary Mantra

ॐ गोवर्धनधराधार गोपाल गोपरूपिणे, गोकुलोत्सवनाथाय गोविन्दाय नमो नमः (Om Govardhana-Dhara-Dhara Gopala Goparupine, Gokulotsava-Nathaya Govindaya Namo Namah)

Vrat Katha (Story Origin)

The Bhagavata Purana narrates that the Vrindavan villagers traditionally worshipped Indra for rains. Young Krishna persuaded them to worship Govardhan hill instead, which truly sustained their cattle. Enraged Indra unleashed torrential floods for seven days. Krishna lifted Govardhan on his little finger as a giant umbrella, sheltering all villagers and cows beneath. Humbled, Indra sought forgiveness, establishing Govardhan Puja and Annakuta as eternal celebration of Krishna supremacy over Vedic pride.
