Significance

Dhanurmasa (also called Margazhi in Tamil) is the holiest month for Sri Vaishnavas across South India and a parallel devotional pinnacle to the Vaikuntha Ekadashi celebrations. The Bhagavad Gita itself declares (10.35): "Masanam Margashirsho'ham" — "Of months, I am Margashirsha." During this month, all Vishnu temples open at Brahma muhurta (04:00-05:30) for Tiruppavai chanting and pre-dawn Suprabhata aaradhana. The vrat commemorates the 30-day Margazhi pavai-nombu performed by Andal (Godadevi), the only female Alvar saint, who composed the 30 Tiruppavai pasurams (verses) — one for each day of the month. Devotees observe early morning baths, full Tiruppavai recitation, and akkaravadisal (sweet pongal) offering daily for 30 days.

Who Observes

Sri Vaishnavas across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Iyengar communities worldwide. Particularly observed by unmarried women seeking ideal husbands (mirroring Andal's tapasya for Krishna). Iyengar temples (Srirangam, Tirumala, Melukote, Kanchi Varadaraja, Tiruvallikeni) conduct mass Tiruppavai chanting at 04:00 daily. Madhva sampradaya observes parallel Dhanur masa puja with Sri Krishna abhisheka and Bhagavad Gita parayana.

Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)

  • Bathe before Brahma muhurta (preferably 03:30-04:30) for all 30 days
  • Visit Vishnu/Krishna temple before sunrise for Suprabhata and Tiruppavai chanting
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, onion-garlic for all 30 days
  • Observe ekabhukta (one meal a day) on Wednesdays and Saturdays of the month
  • Strict celibacy and silence (mauna) during morning hours
  • Vaikuntha Ekadashi (occurring within Dhanurmasa) observed with nirjala fast

Rituals (Puja Vidhi)

  1. Pre-dawn bath in cold water (no warm water permitted in orthodox observance)
  2. Recite all 30 Tiruppavai pasurams of Andal daily — one specific pasuram emphasized per day
  3. Offer akkaravadisal (sweet pongal of rice, jaggery, milk, ghee, cashew, raisin) as naivedya
  4. Perform Suprabhata Seva to Vishnu/Krishna at Brahma muhurta
  5. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita 10th chapter (Vibhuti Yoga), and Andal Tirumozhi
  6. On the 30th day (Bhogi/Vaikuntha Ekadashi proximity), perform grand Tiruppavai concluding ritual

Prasad

Akkaravadisal (sweet pongal), ven pongal, sakkarai pongal, milk-rice payasam, vadai, banana, coconut

Benefits (Phal)

The vrat is considered the most concentrated month of Vishnu-bhakti in the entire Hindu calendar — 30 days of pre-dawn worship is said to equal 30 years of regular bhakti. Specifically grants: ideal life-partner for unmarried women (Andal-style), marital harmony for couples, removal of Pitra dosha, success in spiritual sadhana, and direct connection to Vaikuntha-bhumi. The Vaikuntha Ekadashi falling within Dhanurmasa is said to open the Vaikuntha-dvara — observers who pass through the Sorga Vasal at Srirangam are guaranteed Vishnu-loka after death. Spiritually, the cold pre-dawn discipline builds tremendous tapasya-shakti and develops Andal's nayaki-bhava (bridal devotion) — the highest emotional flavor of Sri Vaishnavism.

Primary Mantra

(Margazhi-t-tingal madi niraindha nannaalaal)

Vrat Katha (Story Origin)

The Nachchiyar Tirumozhi narrates that Andal (Godadevi), foster-daughter of Periyazhwar of Srivilliputhur, fell deeply in love with Krishna at age 5. Refusing all human marriage proposals, she resolved to win Krishna as husband through the ancient Margazhi pavai-nombu — a 30-day pre-dawn vrat performed by gopis in Vrindavan to win Krishna. Andal composed the 30 Tiruppavai pasurams describing her sakhis (companions) waking each gopi at Brahma muhurta to bathe in the Yamuna and worship Krishna. At age 16, Krishna at Srirangam communicated through Periyazhwar's dream that Andal should be brought to him as bride. She entered Srirangam temple in full bridal finery and merged into the deity itself — the only Alvar to attain physical sayujya (merger). From then, every Sri Vaishnava temple observes the Dhanurmasa Tiruppavai chanting in her commemoration. The Bhagavad Gita verse "Masanam Margashirsho'ham" pre-establishes this month's supremacy from Krishna himself.
