Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat (Monthly)सङ्कष्टी चतुर्थी व्रत
Devoted to Lord Ganesha (Sankatahara — Remover of Obstacles) · Monthly on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi (4th day of waning moon) of every lunar month
Significance
Sankashti Chaturthi falls on the fourth day of the waning moon every month — distinct from Vinayaka Chaturthi (Shukla Paksha). It is dedicated to Lord Ganesha specifically as Sankatahara — the destroyer of accumulated obstacles, debts, lawsuits, family disputes, and health crises. Unlike Vinayaka Chaturthi observed at midday, Sankashti Chaturthi is observed until moonrise — making it a longer, more rigorous fast. The Angarki Sankashti (when Sankashti falls on a Tuesday) is considered the supreme of all Sankashtis — equivalent to performing 100 Sankashti vrats simultaneously, granting instant relief from chronic afflictions.
Who Observes
Ganesha devotees across India, particularly in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Those facing chronic debts, prolonged litigation, health crises, business losses, or family conflict observe this vrat monthly. Many devotees commit to 21 consecutive Sankashti Chaturthis as a focused mahasankalpa for major life obstacles.

Benefits (Phal)
The vrat is the most authoritative monthly remedy for accumulated karmic obstacles. Specifically destroys: chronic debts (especially when observed for 21 consecutive months), prolonged litigation (court cases resolve within 3-6 months), business losses, health crises (especially digestive and nervous system disorders ruled by Ganesha), property disputes, and exam failures. The Angarki Sankashti (Tuesday Sankashti) grants 100× benefits — observed even by Shiva and Parvati to remove curse-effects. Spiritually, the vrat removes all Vighna-bhayas (fears of obstruction) and builds unshakeable faith, transforming the observer into a vighna-nashaka (obstacle-destroyer) for others.
Primary Mantra
Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
The Ganesha Purana narrates that King Surasena of Hastinapur, plagued by chronic debt, lost kingdom, and dying son, met sage Bhrigu who prescribed 21 consecutive Sankashti Chaturthi vrats. The king observed it with absolute devotion; on the 21st moonrise, Ganesha appeared and granted: instant cancellation of debts, restoration of kingdom, and the son rose from his deathbed. The same Purana describes how Lord Krishna himself, falsely accused of stealing the Syamantaka jewel due to seeing the moon on a Chaturthi, observed Sankashti Chaturthi to remove the curse — establishing the vrat's power even for divine beings. The Angarki Sankashti specifically arose when Ganesha removed Angarka (Mars)'s curse-burden on a Tuesday Chaturthi.
