Per Bhagavata Purana + Hari Vamsa — Janmashtami vrata grants Krishna personal grace (krishna-prema), dissolution of all sins of current incarnation, blessing of son or grandson (if observed by parents), Vaikuntha residence at time of death, and merit equivalent to 12 Ekadashi observances combined. Particularly potent for childless couples desiring son.
Primary Mantra
Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
Per Bhagavata Purana, demon king Kansa had imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva at Mathura, slaying their first 7 children due to prophecy that Devaki 8th child would kill him. On Bhadrapad Krishna Ashtami midnight, Lord Krishna was born in the prison cell. Vasudeva carried baby Krishna across the flooded Yamuna to Gokul (Vrindavan) where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda. The day commemorates this avatar of Vishnu coming to slay Kansa and restore dharma — observed annually by all Vaishnav families with midnight birth celebration.
