Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)

  • One meal before sunset — wheat-based (not rice)
  • No salt for serious observers (saltless meal)
  • No oil, no fried food
  • Red clothes worn
  • Break fast facing sun after viewing him
  • Observe 12, 21, or 30 consecutive Sundays

Rituals (Puja Vidhi)

  1. Bathe before sunrise, wear red
  2. Surya Arghya at sunrise — copper vessel, water + roli + red flowers + akshat
  3. 12 Surya Namaskar with corresponding mantras
  4. Recite Aditya Hridayam (Ramayana 107th sarga, taught to Rama before Ravan-yuddha)
  5. Suryasthakam recitation
  6. Donate wheat, jaggery, red clothes, copper to brahmin/needy
