Vata Savitri Vratवट सावित्री व्रत
Devoted to Goddess Savitri (consort of Brahma) and Vata-vriksha (banyan tree) · Annually on Jyestha Amavasya (north India) or Jyestha Purnima (south/west India)
Significance
Vata Savitri Vrat is the most sacred vrat for married Hindu women (suhagins) seeking the longevity (saubhagya) of their husbands. Observed by tying a sacred thread 108 times around a banyan (vata) tree, the vrat commemorates Savitri's legendary victory over Yamaraja in winning back her husband Satyavan's life. The banyan tree, considered Akshaya-vata (eternal tree), symbolizes immortality and is worshipped as the abode of Trimurti (Brahma in roots, Vishnu in trunk, Shiva in branches). This vrat is the female counterpart to Karva Chauth in spiritual weight but predates it by millennia, traced to the Mahabharata Vana Parva.
Who Observes
Married Hindu women across north India (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan observe on Jyestha Amavasya), and Maharashtra/Gujarat/Karnataka women (observe on Jyestha Purnima). Newly-married brides observe the first vrat under in-laws guidance. Widowed and unmarried women generally do not observe.

Bhigayajat chana (soaked black chana with jaggery), 7 fruits, mango aam-panna, panchamrit, vayan-basket sweets
Benefits (Phal)
The vrat grants 7-births uninterrupted saubhagya — guaranteeing the same husband across reincarnations. It removes premature widowhood yogas in horoscope (mangal-shani-rahu afflictions to the 7th house), grants husband's longevity beyond his fated lifespan (as Savitri did for Satyavan), and ensures prosperity, healthy children, and family harmony. Observers gain pativrata-shakti — the cosmic power of one-pointed marital devotion that even Yamaraja cannot oppose. Spiritually, the vrat is considered the supreme example of dharmic strength of a wife and transmits Savitri's tapasya-shakti to all sincere observers.
Primary Mantra
Vrat Katha (Story Origin)
The Mahabharata Vana Parva (chapters 277-283) narrates that Princess Savitri, daughter of King Ashwapati, chose Satyavan as husband despite Narada's warning that he would die exactly one year after marriage. On the fated day, Savitri observed Vata Savitri Vrat and accompanied Satyavan to the forest. When Yamaraja came to take Satyavan's soul, Savitri followed him for many yojanas, refusing to turn back. Impressed by her dharmic resolve, Yamaraja granted her three boons (excluding Satyavan's life) — she wisely asked for sight to her blind father-in-law, restoration of the lost kingdom, and a hundred sons born of her own womb. Yamaraja granted all three — then realized he had granted her sons, which required Satyavan to be alive. Bound by his word, Yamaraja returned Satyavan's soul. From then, the vrat became the supreme practice for marital longevity across Sanatana Dharma.
