Significance

Mangalvar Vrat is dedicated to Lord Hanuman as the supreme protector and to Mangal graha (Mars) as the karaka of courage, strength, brothers, and property. Tuesday is ruled by Mars in Vedic astrology — making it the most powerful day for Hanuman worship. Devotees observe this vrat to remove Mangal dosha (Manglik problem) in horoscope, gain physical strength, win court cases, overcome enemies, and seek protection from accidents and surgeries. The vrat is particularly recommended for unmarried Manglik youth and those facing prolonged Saturn-Mars affliction.

Who Observes

Hanuman devotees across India, Manglik individuals (especially before marriage), wrestlers, soldiers, students preparing for competitive exams, those in litigation, and women praying for sons or protection of brothers observe this vrat weekly.

Fasting Rules (Upvas Niyam)

  • Eat only one meal during the day, taken after Hanuman puja at sunset
  • Strictly avoid salt, oil, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food
  • Wear red or saffron clothes; women avoid black and dark blue
  • Maintain celibacy (brahmacharya) and avoid alcohol on Tuesdays
  • Phalahar (fruits, milk, jaggery) permitted during the day
  • Some devotees observe complete nirjala (waterless) fast for advanced sadhana

Rituals (Puja Vidhi)

  1. Bathe before sunrise; visit Hanuman temple wearing red or saffron
  2. Offer sindoor mixed with mustard oil (chola) to Hanuman murti
  3. Light a chameli (jasmine) oil lamp and offer red flowers, betel leaf, and gud-channa
  4. Recite Hanuman Chalisa 7, 11, or 108 times and Sundara Kanda from Ramayana
  5. Tie a red mauli thread on the right wrist after worship
  6. Break fast with sweet prasad of besan laddoo, halwa, or rava kesari

Prasad

Boondi laddoo, besan laddoo, jaggery-channa (gud-channa), halwa, and banana

Benefits (Phal)

The vrat is the most authoritative remedy for Mangal dosha and Manglik horoscope afflictions delaying marriage. Observers gain immense physical strength, mental courage, protection from accidents, victory over enemies, success in litigation, and removal of black magic and evil eye. Hanuman, being a Chiranjeevi (immortal), grants long life and immunity from premature death to sincere observers. Spiritually, the vrat develops absolute surrender (sharanagati) and unshakeable Ram-bhakti — Hanuman is the supreme exemplar of dasya-bhakti and grants the same purity of devotion to his worshippers.

Primary Mantra

ॐ हं हनुमते नमः, ॐ अं अङ्गारकाय नमः, मनोजवं मारुततुल्यवेगं जितेन्द्रियं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम् (Om Ham Hanumate Namah, Om Am Angarakaya Namah, Manojavam Maaruta-tulya-vegam)

Vrat Katha (Story Origin)

The Skanda Purana narrates that a poor childless Brahmin couple in Kashi observed Mangalvar Vrat for 21 consecutive Tuesdays. On the 21st Tuesday, Hanuman appeared in their dream and blessed them with a divine son named Mangaldev, born with the strength of Vayu. When King Chitravarma's queen also observed the vrat for protection of her unborn child, Hanuman saved the prince from a poisonous snake bite on the day of birth. From then, Mangalvar Vrat became established as the supreme remedy for Mangal dosha, childlessness, and protection from premature death across all of Sanatana Dharma.
