Summary

A foundational Shaiva Upanishad consisting of the dialogue between Lord Pashupati (Shiva) and sage Pippalada, with subsequent transmission through sage Jabali (different from the Jabali of Ramayana). The Upanishad establishes the Pashupata vrata — the supreme vow of the Pashupata Shaiva tradition consisting of three layers of bhasma-snana (bath in sacred ash): the gross outer smearing of vibhuti across forehead, throat, chest, navel, and arms forming the tripundra; the subtle internal purification of the panchakosha through visualization; and the supreme realization that the ash itself represents the burnt remains of all dvaita (duality) — what remains is only Shiva. The Upanishad explains the deep metaphysics of bhasma: every wood-fire reduces complex matter to its simplest residue (ash); similarly, the inner agni of jnana reduces the complex jiva-jagat-Ishvara distinctions to their simplest residue (Shiva-Self). Lakulisha, the 2nd century CE founder of the systematic Pashupata Shaiva school, drew his entire Pashupata Sutra commentary tradition from this Upanishad. The text gives the formula for the Bhasma Jabala mantras still chanted by every Lingayata, Veerashaiva, and dasanami sannyasi at morning bhasma-snana.

सर्वे देवा भस्म रुद्राः सर्व देवा भस्म वासुदेवाः। तस्माद्भस्मना धारयेद्विप्रः सर्वकर्मसु॥

Sarve devā bhasma rudrāḥ sarva devā bhasma vāsudevāḥ, tasmād bhasmanā dhārayed vipraḥ sarva-karmasu

All the gods become ash in Rudra, all the gods become ash in Vasudeva — therefore the wise one should wear sacred ash in all his acts.

Takeaway

Every fire leaves ash. The fire of jnana leaves only Shiva. Smear the ash daily and remember: what burns is duality, what remains is the Self.
