Timing: Immediately after birth, before the umbilical cord is cut

Purpose

To welcome the newborn into the world, awaken the intellect, and grant the first taste of nourishment with sacred substances.

The ritual

The father whispers the Gayatri mantra into the baby’s ear, applies honey + ghee with a gold stylus to the tongue (medha-janana), and recites prayers for long life, strength, and intelligence.
