Purpose
The "beginning of knowledge" — the child writes the first letters under the guidance of a teacher, invoking Saraswati for lifelong learning.
The ritual
After prayers to Ganesha + Saraswati, the child is guided to write "Om" or "Hari Sri Ganapataye Namah" with the index finger on a tray of rice or sand. The guru holds the child’s hand and traces sacred letters.
