Timing: 7th–8th month of pregnancy (the modern "baby shower")
Purpose
To bless the expectant mother, cheer her with positive surroundings, and pray for safe delivery + a beautiful child.
The ritual
The husband parts the wife’s hair upward (the literal meaning of "simanta") three times with a porcupine quill or special sprig of darbha grass, while chanting mantras. Sweet foods are offered + sung blessings.
