उपनयन

Upanayana

Upanayana

Timing: 7th–8th year (brahmin), 11th (kshatriya), 12th (vaishya) — the sacred-thread / janeu ceremony

Purpose

The "second birth" (dvija) — the child is initiated into Vedic study, formally given the Gayatri mantra, and qualified to enter brahmacharya ashrama.

The ritual

After ritual bath, the guru ties the sacred thread (yajnopavita) over the left shoulder + under the right arm, whispers the Gayatri mantra into the right ear, kindles the sacred fire, and accepts the student. The boy is now a brahmachari.

Key elements

  • Yajnopavita (sacred thread)
  • Gayatri mantra initiation
  • Sacred fire
  • Mauñji-mekhalā (girdle of muñja grass)
  • Begging for alms (bhiksha) — symbolic

Performed by

Guru / acharya / family priest

Scriptural reference

Apastamba Grihya Sutra; Manu Smriti 2.36-37

Modern relevance

Widely practiced in brahmin families; the Gayatri initiation remains its spiritual core. Some progressive families perform it for girls too (originally permitted in Vedic times).
