Timing: Shortly after Upanayana — beginning of Vedic study

Purpose

To formally commence the study of the Vedas under the guru, with the student now spiritually qualified after Upanayana.

The ritual

The guru and student perform sacred-fire rites; the guru recites a few mantras from the appropriate Veda (based on the family’s shakha), and the student repeats. Daily study begins.
