Ayyappa Chalisa
अय्यप्पा चालीसा
40-verse hymn to Lord Ayyappa — Hariharaputra, the son of Hari (Vishnu in Mohini form) and Hara (Shiva), who manifests as the eternally celibate (Naishtika Brahmachari) yogi-king of Sabarimala. Praised here as Manikanta (the bell-throated one — the bell tied to his neck as an infant by King Rajashekhara of Pandalam), Dharma Sastha (the lord of righteousness), and Bhutanatha (lord of all beings).
Significance
Ayyappa's chalisa is the spiritual companion of every Sabarimala pilgrim during the 41-day vratam — when the devotee wears the black or saffron dhoti, the mala of tulsi or rudraksha tied by a Guruswami, practices strict celibacy, takes pre-dawn cold-water baths, and lives as an ascetic in his own home. Recited daily, it culminates in the famous 18-step ascent at Sannidhanam chanting "Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa" — each of the 18 sacred steps representing a phase of the spiritual journey from the five senses through the three gunas to vidya and avidya.
When recited: During the 41-day Mandala vratam preceding the Sabarimala yatra (mid-November to mid-January), daily for those wearing the Ayyappa mala, on Makar Sankranti (January 14 — Makaravilakhu darshan), on the first Saturday of Karkidakam (Malayalam month), throughout the Pamba-to-Sannidhanam trek

Meaning
Victory to Ayyappa, son of Hari and Hara, the bell-necked, pure celibate. From Pamba to Sannidhanam all chant "Swamiye Sharanam." Whoever climbs the eighteen steps with the irumudi (sacred two-pouched bundle) on his head, whoever holds the 41-day vrat and ties the mala from the Guruswami, that one receives the darshan of the Makara Jyothi (the celestial light on Makar Sankranti) and infinite punya enters his heart. You are called Dharma-Sastha and Bhutanatha — O Ayyappa, lord of Sabarimala. Recited every day of the 41-day Mandala vratam by pilgrims preparing for the Sabarimala yatra, and during the final 5 km trek from Pamba base camp to Sannidhanam.
