Ganga Chalisa
गंगा चालीसा
40-verse hymn to Maa Ganga — the celestial river brought down from Brahma's kamandalu by King Bhagiratha's 1000-year penance, descending through Shiva's matted locks (jata) to flow upon the earth and liberate the 60,000 sons of Sagara. Worshipped as Patita Pavani (purifier of the fallen) and Tripathaga (flowing through heaven, earth, and underworld).
Significance
No Hindu samskara is complete without Ganga jal — from birth to cremation. Her chalisa is the daily prayer of every Kashi resident, Haridwar pandit, and Allahabad Sangam priest. Recited at asthi-visarjan (immersion of ashes) to ensure the departed soul's liberation, and at Kumbh Mela bathing to wash away lifetimes of accumulated karma.
When recited: Ganga Dussehra (Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami), Ganga Saptami, daily bath at Ganga ghats, Kumbh Mela, before asthi-visarjan
Benefits
- Purification of past karmas across multiple lifetimes
- Liberation (moksha) for deceased ancestors via asthi-visarjan
- Cure of chronic ailments through faith-based Ganga-jal therapy
- Pacification of Pitra Dosha and Kala Sarpa Dosha
- Spiritual merit of Kumbh-snan even when recited from a distance
- Final liberation if the chalisa is on one's lips at the moment of death

Meaning
Victory, victory, victory to Ganga, purifier of the world, mother of Bhishma, venerated by all creation. Originating from the feet of Vishnu, you came to dwell in Brahma's water-pot. You gathered into Shiva's matted hair, then descended to earth with Bhagiratha. You liberated the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara; you are called by the name Patita Pavani (purifier of the fallen). From Haridwar to Kashi to Prayaga, your union with the ocean is the bridal blessing of the land. Flowing through the three paths (heaven, earth, underworld), saviouress of the three worlds, bestower of liberation, dispeller of sin. Devotees who recite this chalisa with reverence at sunrise on her bank, or even from distant lands holding Ganga-jal in their palm, receive the karmic purification that has sustained Sanatana Dharma for ten thousand years.
