Narmada Chalisa
नर्मदा चालीसा
40-verse hymn to Maa Narmada — the only river in Hindu tradition whose mere darshan (sight) is said to grant moksha, without the need to bathe. Born from Lord Shiva's sweat as he meditated on Mount Mekal, she flows westward 1312 km from Amarkantak to the Arabian Sea, her every stone (banalinga) revered as a self-manifest Shiva linga.
Significance
Narmada is the only river accorded the full 3600-km circumambulation (parikrama) — pilgrims walk both banks over 3 years 3 months 13 days. Her chalisa accompanies every step of that vow. Reciting it daily is said to grant the merit of bathing in Ganga seven times, and to dissolve the gravest sins through the cooling touch of her white waters.
When recited: Narmada Jayanti (Magha Shukla Saptami), during Narmada Parikrama, daily bath at Narmada ghats, Mondays at Omkareshwar
Benefits
- Liberation merit equivalent to bathing in Ganga seven times
- Pacification of Pitra Dosha and ancestral karmic debts
- Cure of chronic skin diseases and inflammatory disorders
- Cooling of pitta-related afflictions in body and mind
- Successful completion of Narmada Parikrama vow
- Spontaneous remembrance at the moment of death (granting moksha)

Meaning
O Devi Narmada, worshipped goddess, dweller at Amarkantak, beheld in the three times of day — most sacred, bestower of liberation, salutations to you. Victory, victory to Narmada Bhavani, daughter of Shiva, auspicious and beneficent. Daughter of Mount Mekal is your name, manifested from Shankara's perspiration. From Amarkantak you flow forth, joining the western ocean. By darshan alone all sins are destroyed; every stone in your bed shines as a self-manifest Shiva linga (banalinga). Devotees who recite this chalisa with reverence — whether walking your 3600 km parikrama or remembering you from afar — receive the merit of liberation that you uniquely grant: moksha by sight alone, without the need to even touch your cooling waters.
