Santoshi Mata Chalisa
सन्तोषी माता चालीसा
40-verse hymn to Santoshi Mata — the goddess of contentment and satisfaction, daughter of Lord Ganesha and his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi. The deity emerged in popular Hindu worship during the 20th century but draws on much older Tantric Ganapati lineage traditions. The Chalisa describes her four-armed form holding a sword, trishul, kalash, and abhaya mudra, seated on a lotus, with the Friday-fast prohibition against sour foods (khatta) being her foundational injunction.
Significance
The most widely-observed vrat by north Indian women in the late 20th and 21st centuries. The 16-Friday Santoshi Vrat is considered the supreme remedy for marital problems, financial stress, and removal of all causes of family discontent. The injunction against sour foods (especially imli, lemon, raw mango) for 16 consecutive Fridays develops dietary discipline and trains the mind in contentment. The Chalisa is recited at the beginning and conclusion of the 16-week vrat cycle.
When recited: 16 consecutive Fridays (Shukravar Vrat), beginning preferably in Shukla Paksha of Shravan or Margashirsha; during the Santoshi Mata Vrat-katha; on Akshaya Tritiya; before new beginnings requiring contentment of mind
Benefits
- Removal of marital discord and family quarrels
- Financial stability and freedom from sudden expenses
- Recovery from long-pending court cases and property disputes
- Mental contentment (santosh) — the foundational psychological state for all spiritual progress
- Granting of long-desired worldly wishes (especially conception, employment, debt-clearance)
- Protection of children from accidents and illness
Opening verses
First 6 verses of the Santoshi Mata Chalisa — the most-recited opening section.
Meaning
Victory to Santoshi Mata, beloved daughter of Ganapati. You are the child of Riddhi and Siddhi, the bestower of happiness and prosperity. Whoever observes the 16-Friday vrat keeping the prohibition against sour food, offers jaggery-chana as bhog, and hears/recites your story, on the 16th Friday performs the Udyapan ceremony — receives all wished-for fruits in life. Whoever sings with faith daily receives wealth and contentment in his home. The chalisa is the opening invocation of the entire 16-week Shukravar Vrat cycle, the foundational vrat for marital harmony and family contentment in modern north Indian household practice.
