Parvati Chalisa
पार्वती चालीसा
40-verse hymn to Devi Parvati — daughter of Himavan, consort of Shiva, mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya, the supreme Shakti who united with Mahadeva through the longest tapasya in puranic literature. Praised here as Gauri (the fair one), Uma (light), Aparna (she who lived on no food during her penance), Ambika (the universal mother), and Mahadevi (the supreme goddess).
Significance
Parvati embodies the principle that divine union is earned through unwavering tapas (austerity) and shraddha (faith). Her chalisa is the foundational hymn for unmarried women seeking a worthy husband, for married women seeking marital harmony, for mothers seeking the wellbeing of their children, and for all devotees seeking to balance Shiva (consciousness) with Shakti (energy) within themselves. Recited extensively during Hartalika Teej, when women fast without food or water for 24 hours in emulation of Parvati's austerity to win Shiva.
When recited: Mondays (Shiva-Parvati day), Hartalika Teej (Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya), Gauri Tritiya, Mangala Gauri Vrat (Tuesdays of Shravan), throughout Navaratri, before marriage and during marital reconciliation
Benefits
- Worthy husband for unmarried women (the central Hartalika Teej blessing)
- Marital harmony, end of marital discord, return of an estranged spouse
- Removal of mangal-dosha and shukra-dosha afflictions
- Healthy progeny, particularly sons (the boon she granted to many devotees)
- Beauty, grace, and the inner radiance that comes from tapas
- Reconciliation with one's mother and elder women in the family
Opening verses
First 6 verses of the Parvati Chalisa — the most-recited opening section.
Meaning
Victory to Girija (daughter of the mountain), victory to Ambika, daughter of the king of mountains. Victory, victory to Ambika, victory to Jagadamba (mother of the universe), beloved consort of Shiva-Shankara. Parvati performed the most severe tapasya, and chose Shiva as her husband through self-purification. The woman who keeps the Hartalika Teej vrat with full faith for the entire tithi obtains the husband of her heart's desire, a partner equal to Shiva. The grace of Mother Gauri is boundless — she severs every difficulty and bestows liberation. Recited on Mondays, Tuesdays of Shravan, and most powerfully during Hartalika Teej.
